The JAWS Society Annual Conference brings together OMS practice managers/administrators to learn, network, and share what does and does not work. In 2014, participants from 36 states and Canada, representing groups of all sizes attended our conference in San Diego. This year we will meet in New Orleans, and I invite you to join us! Our theme is Compliance Made Easy in the Big Easy. Look over the list of speakers and topics for more information – it’s not all about Compliance.
Spring time is a great opportunity to recharge your batteries and what better way to do that than to spend a couple days with your peers discussing the issues that face all of us. Richard D. Sanders represents a variety of healthcare providers on a broad range of issues, including business transactions, fraud and abuse compliance (Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark), Certificate of Need (CON) issues, medical staff credentialing, Medicare reimbursement, antitrust policy, legislative activities, and assisting providers in their relationships with federal and state regulatory agencies. Rich has been named to The Best Lawyers in America for 2012-2013.
After graduating from Duke University in 1992 with a double-major in political science and history, Rich earned his Juris Doctor degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1996. Rich currently serves on the adjunct faculty at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and teaches courses in business and regulatory law. In 2004, he was awarded Professor of the Year. Rich is a former intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy, where he worked with an Atlanta-based unit supporting the U.S. Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy.
He serves on the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors of MCG Health System, Inc. in Augusta, parent of Georgia’s oldest medical school and second largest hospital. His non-profit activities have included: Secretary of the Board of Buckhead Baseball (Cal Ripken League), Member of the Board of the Garden Hills Neighborhood Foundation, and member of the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club. He and his wife Rebekah live in Buckhead and have three children: James (2000), William (2002) and Caroline (2005). They are members of the Cathedral of St. Philip (Episcopal) in Atlanta.
Examples of Recent Projects:
- Facilitated a $4,000,000 joint venture between a publicly traded company and a large physician practice.
- Assisted in sale of an interest of a large physician group practice, including the development of an agreement for the future buy-in and sale of interests.
- Developed multiple physician integration models for a regional health system.
- Negotiated settlement of dispute with Department of Justice on behalf of a community hospital, after its Chief Financial Officer became a whistleblower.
- Achieved dismissal of false claims portion of a qui tam (whistleblower) action under the federal False Claims Act for a federally-qualified health center.
- Advised two regional hospitals regarding compliance with the Breach Notification provisions of the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

Session Information: Government Trends and PPACA... What Will Happen?

Recently the US Supreme Court announced that it will hear a case that challenges PPACA. The case specifically challenges whether subsidies that help individuals pay their insurance premiums through federally-operated exchanges are lawful. In many states the federal government runs the online marketplaces, while some states offer their own exchanges. Join us at the JAWS Society Meeting for a legislative update on PPACA and a discussion of the US Supreme Court’s decision to review PPACA and its implications to payors.

Sean Wild brings a diverse background to medicine and dentistry having graduated from the Naval and
Marine Corps, Air Intelligence Training Center, Intelligence Specialist “A” school, Naval Instructor School, and the Naval and Marine Corps, Physical Security School (SSO). He received the Naval Achievement Medal among other numerous personal awards during his service. While at Rider University, he was named the 2008 Andrew J. Rider Scholar, and is a Summa Cum Laude graduate, with a BA in Global Multi-National, Multi-Cultural Studies.
Business Management and Organizational systems are his specialty as he has managed business both here and abroad for multi-national companies. He is well attuned to the challenges of small business ownership as he has owned and sold a number of small businesses himself. He is a member of the JAWS Society, as a CEO of a large and progressive multi-location, multi-doctor academic and private practice group, and is currently the President of a Medical/Dental Consulting group. Since taking on these positions, he has founded OMS3, a medical data illumination company.

This course will cover a number of important terms, definitions, and responsibilities of medical and dental practices in protecting patient health information as directed by HIPAA, Health and Human Services, and the Office of Civil Rights.
The goal of this information is to provide context to the many challenges that we are facing in our day-to-day business of treating patients.
This course is by no means conclusive in providing a complete understanding of all of the regulations and responsibilities your practice will face from the HIPAA and the HITECH ACT. Adrienne Baker is an Associate Director of Law Enforcement Liaison and Education for Purdue Pharma. Prior to joining Purdue in 2012, Mrs. Baker was Principal Agent for the Georgia State Medical Board. As a State law enforcement officer in Georgia for 15 years she conducted investigations involving pharmaceutical drug diversion and violations of state laws and regulations relating to medical practitioners. For her entire career she has traveled throughout the United State educating doctors, law enforcement officers, healthcare professionals and community groups regarding safe and legal medical practices involving prescription drugs. Mrs. Baker testified and assisted in the passing of SB 36, the Georgia Prescription Monitoring Program. In 2009 she was named one of Georgia’s top 40 under 40 by Georgia Trend magazine.
